In October 2001, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation hosted an event, entitled "Faculty of Color in Michiga's Health Professional Schools." This forum's focus was on recruitment and retention of minority faculty at the three major research institutions in the State of Michigan ( Wayne State University, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan). Following that forum, the three research universities, along with the Kellogg Foundation, sought to establish new initiatives to support research into topics identified at the forum as high-priority areas. One such initiative was the Michigan Consortium for Minority Health & Academic Development

The Michigan Consortium for Minority Health & Academic Development was created to establish a virtual center for those who research minority health and health disparities. Supported by a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation from 2003 to 2005, the initiative continues to be sustained through funding by the University of Michigan Medical School Diversity & Career Development Office.

A health disparity symposium series, as well as this website, was developed to address some of the barriers to reducing health disparities, including through research development and the recruitment and retention in the health professions of those who research such disparities.

This website is a medium to showcase the work of researchers who are committed to reducing/eliminating health disparities. To support professional development, we provide information on job postings as well as conferences and links to websites that share our mission of reducing/eliminating health disparities.
